I would not have signed up if that was the case. I'm very much someone who has military planning of their career, but because of Bryan Fuller, I said, lets try this.ĮTonline: Fuller revealed some footage at Comic-Con - will you be in heavy prosthetics the whole time? Where we go can be quite unusual and I was intrigued. Maybe you seem humanity in juxtaposition with seeing monsters behave in a similar and dissimilar way. In a special, one-night-only movie event, taking place on May 5 th, Syfy is airing the four. Bryan Fuller's take with this series could dramatically go to quite a dark place. Eddie Izzard Talks TREASURE ISLAND, Possibility of a Sequel, and the MUNSTERS Reboot MOCKINGBIRD LANE. Izzard: Trying to get inside those characters is very intriguing. That's why I need 8 years to pack it up and do everything I can.ĮTonline: Before you do, you'll star in NBC's Mockingbird Land. I will put all my creative careers into deep hibernation. I'm going to run for office in 8 years though. It's all about the perspective because if you did something about Barack Obama right now, you record it and two years later, it looks dated. I talk about where we sit in the world, what we did, is there a God, why do we hate, what is this all about. Izzard: I think I'm a historical political/social political commentator. Will that once again be the gist of your 2013/2014 tour? I also asked if we could show Silver cutting his leg off to show what a determined person he was.ĮTonline: Your grasp of, and perspective on, history has always been so exciting as a fan. So Churchill was someone I thought about a lot. Then, when the political sh*t hit the fan when Hitler arrived, he was brought back in. He was in the conservative party then he changed to the liberal party and then changed back again. The only person who has done that successfully in real life is Churchill. He was with the pirates and then against the pirates, and then with the pirates again. Izzard: I was thinking he'd have this long hair, but they brought me a mockup of him with this shaved head, and I'd been looking to shave my head for some time. They were the people who'd made it outside the system.ĮTonline: Physically, your Long John Silver has a very distinct look. Pirates were the rock and roll people of that time. If you got to be a gentleman, the amount you work drops off greatly and you live off the fat of the land. There's the bit at the end about the gentleman. Justice was harder to find and death was swifter, but they had votes - women could vote even before America allowed it. You could argue there was more democracy with pirates. Izzard: There's some intriguing things about people who were villains or pirates in those days. We're already looking at Treasure Island 2.ĮTonline: What excites you about seeing more from these men? I think ours can rank up there as, if not the best one, one of the best ones going. I think pirates have lost their edge over the centuries, so I wanted to do a story about 20 guys who go out and only four come back. I feel like the other Treasure Island's have been a bit too campy and family friendly. The project has completed filming in Dublin and in Puerto Rico and is now in post production, expecting to air on Sky as one of the hallmarks of its Christmas schedule and has been launched to international buyers at the market.ETonline: Treasure Island is a well-told story - what excited you about this version?Įddie Izzard: I wanted to do an edgy and dark adaptation. “You don’t often see a period piece where the camera is moving in such a way that makes you feel you were really there.” The brief was to be brave,” says director Steve Barron. “We didn’t want to make a boring costume drama – we’ve seen a lot of those. “I’m a determined bastard and that’s what Long John I like to play those sorts of characters. I feel from his point of view they are the good guys, he says. “Silver has got to try and keep everyone onside while he kept changing his position. Izzard took inspiration from big figures like Churchill who had charisma and stoicism as his core but also a flair for ambiguity and getting the job done. We’ve put Tre asure Island into this darker place where everyone is after the money. “It’s not an ordinary family drama like the ones where no-one really dies, or if they do they are quite happy to do it. “I said I’d do the part because but only if it was edgy enough and I didn’t sign on ’till I saw the script,” says Izzard, speaking at MIPCOM, likening the reboot of the Pirate genre to something like the way Tim Burton transformed Batman.īeing able to bring more than a touch of brutality – as well as a Pirate’s self-serving ethic – to the complex and often ambiguous role, was part of the fun, he adds.
